SIRS Discoverer and Sirs Issue Researcher
I found SIRS Discoverer very intersting. The product made research easy for the beginning researcher. The various articles on the armadillo provided a variety of information that included pictures. Ther was even an article that talked about the armadillo's ability to contract leprosy. The photographs were great. I was disappointed not to find more articles that were considered challenging. Many of the students I encounter read on a level beyond their grade, but there are perhaps more challenging articles in other subjects.
I chose Nicaragua as the county in country facts and found the information there interesting. There was reference to the diversion of aid to the Nicaraguan governement resulting in a scandal in the US. What I believe would be more helpful in this section would e links to article that would expand on the various subjects discussed in the timeline. The timeline form provides a good framework for the beginning of a research project. I thought the learning tools for educators were beneficial as well.
I had a boy come into the library whose mother was deployed to Afghanistan so I chose Afghanistan as the map. I had pulled one out of a book when he came in so I could show him where his mother was. This map was much more detailed and would be much more helpful for him and other children whose parents are in the military. The related article feature was an excellent feature as it covered issues other than the war. There was even an article that had a recipe for raita. This provides the opportunity for other cultures to be explored.
Science Fair explorer was a lot of fun. There were all kinds of experiments that kids could do for science fairs or just to explore science. Besides science fair projects, this feature can be used by parents who are trying to get their children interested in science. The projects are all simple and utilize every day products that are found in the home.
I liked the way the home page was set up. It was easy to navigate for all ages.
Sirs Researcher
In light of Rush Limbaugh's inappropriate comments I couldn't resist choosing birth control access as a topic. I understand that the most recent contoversies will not necessarily be listed, but I was curious about what would be available.I found that the newspapers section on the topic did provide up to date articles and opinions on the recent birth control controvery although the Rush Limbaugh issue was too recent. There was balanced coverage of both sides of the issue and gave good suggestions for topics that a student may want to explore for research paper topics. I did try the interactive feature and it didn't work.
I couldn't find Curriculum Pathfinder? I looked under educator tools and couldn't find it.
